The Lillian Gish memoir

Hello there!
I've been away for quite some time. I had a minor argument with my housemate, the whole thing escalated to the point where he cut off my internet connection. I tried setting up a mobile connection but that sucked in a big way so it was no good.
But now things are back to "normal" again, the internet is up and running and I can start sharing things with you again.

I'll start off with something that I received in the mail recently. I fetched it from the post office and opened it with trembling hands. What I was holding was the autobiography of Miss Lillian Gish, signed by the saintly lady herself:

Loads more pictures after the jump!

This book means the world to me, it's like magic, like something from an Egyptian tomb... I mean... SHE laid her little hand down on this page and wrote on it. It blows my mind.
Anyway, I wanted to share some of the amazing photographs from it, so here we go:

Mary McConnell & James Leigh Gish, her parents

Mary Pickford, Mildred Harris, Mary, Dorothy & Lillian

a still from Hearts of the World (1918)

Mother & daughter

Lillian, Mrs. Gish, and Dorothy on the roof of their apartment house after Mrs. Gish's stroke

This and the following two portraits were taken by Nell Dorr

The book contains about sixty photo pages.
My hardback copy was published in 1969 by Prentice Hall.
And the whole title is:
The Movies
Mr. Griffith
and Me

In case you are interested in buying one for yourself, I suggest that you visit bookfinder.com, through which you can find several copies, some of them signed. I paid less that ten dollars for mine (postage included) so make sure you check out all the different sellers and editions on the page. Some are out to rip people off, others are just glad to get rid of old books like this.

ps. a special thank you to lilianavonk, who left me kind comments during my absence

Hi: I stumbled across your blog and love it! You have such great taste in both silent films and stars. And I share your interest in Jack Pickford. A terribly underrated and unfairly maligned person. I have been in the process of writing a series of pieces on him on my blog that you might find interesting. It's paradiseleased.wordpress.com. Thanks for the great blog and keep up the good work! You are most awfully welcome. I'm so glad to hear you have internet access again! And I will try to come by & check for new posts more often, too (did I say that last time? Well, I'll keep saying it until I actually manage to do so!).

I think my wonderful old big-city library in the town where I used to live had a copy of Miss Gish's book, so now I am cursing myself for not having read it when I had the chance. The library where I am now is so small that the librarians recommend buying used books off Amazon if you want to read something that they don't have!

And gosh, but wasn't Pa Gish handsome?! No wonder his daughters turned out to be so beautiful! :D

Again, welcome back. :) ♥
